Welcome to Mighty Oak Equestrian

Our Program
Whether riding for fun, the love of horses, or honing your skills for the show ring our curriculum based program will suit your needs. Safety is our top priority, and with well maintained tack and school horses suitable for every level, our riders learn to be confident and safe in all settings. We carefully plan each lesson to ensure it is specifically tailored for each riders goals. Frequent feedback and discussion of goals offers riders a clear road map for success. At Mighty Oak Equestrian we believe  that horseback riding should not begin and end at the mounting block. We strive to mold our riders into accomplished horsemen and women, teaching them all the necessary skills to prepare them for where ever their equestrian journey may take them, whether that be horse ownership or a professional career. Our program is based on the National Equestrian Canada Learn to Ride program. No matter your experience, age, or aspirations, we have a place for you.

Group lessons (3-5 riders)
Group lessons are an hour long with no more than 5 riders per class. All riders wanting to participate in group lessons must be able to tack up and be ready for their scheduled start time. Group lessons are a lot of fun due to the social aspect, and also offer lots of learning opportunities by watching other riders.

FAQ
The Answers You Need
How old does a child have to be to take riding lessons?
We used to say the youngest age for children to start structured lessons is six, but through many years of experience we have learned that age is not the biggest factor in determining a child's readiness. Many six year old's, and some even older children, do not have the focus or mindset to participate safely . Every child is different. To determine if a child has to mindset, physical ability, and attention span to begin riding lessons the child may be asked to take a trial lesson before enrolling in our program.
What do i need to buy in order to take lessons?
We require all riders to have their own ASTM approved riding helmet, and boots with a 1.5" heel. Boots may be purchased used, but every rider should have a new properly fitted helmet. As the integrity of a helmet can be compromised by falls, drops, and extreme temperatures (being left in a hot car in the summer) it is important to have a helmet you know has been cared for properly. We do not have helmets to loan to riders due to hygiene and safety concerns. No helmet, no ride, no exceptions!
Just like many other sports, there is equipment that can make the sport easier to perform. Riding boots, half chaps and breeches will offer the rider extra support and comfort. Serious riders should have proper riding attire, while beginner riders can stick to the basics (helmet, boots, and long pants) until they are sure they want to stick with it.
When do i take lessons? Do I just show up to the barn?
All lessons are by appointment only. they are weekly reoccurring lessons that are taken at the same day and time each week. Lessons are typically in monthly packages (four lessons).
What should i wear to the barn?
All students must wear appropriate clothing in the barn and while riding. Pants are required to be long (ideally breeches or jodhpurs) and all clothing should be fitted, nothing loose or baggy, which could be a hazard. Long hair should be tied back with an elastic or hair net. You can’t ride if you can’t see! We strongly recommend riding gloves are worn, for the rider’s comfort. And in the colder month’s riders should be dressed in layers that can be removed without going over their head (zipper sweaters and jackets). Parents and spectators should wear closed toe shoes, no open toe shoes are permitted in the barn.
What should i expect at my first lesson?
When you arrive, you will fill out our registration package which includes our liability release, registration forms, and optional photo release. Next the fit of your helmet will be checked, and we will make sure appropriate footwear and attire (long pants) is worn. After that our first stop will be in the tack room where you will be shown where to find the equipment you will need for your assigned horse. Once you have found all needed tack and grooming equipment, you will be introduced to your assigned horse. I will give you a few minutes to get aquatinted and then we will go over the safety rules for being around horses. You will learn to lead, groom, tack up the horse, and how to check if tack is properly fitted. Much of the first lesson will be focused on general horse safety and how to get ready for your lesson. The lesson duration you chose will determine how much time you actually spend in the saddle the first few lessons, for this reason we recommend no less than a 45 min lesson for those with no previous experience. Most riders will also learn to mount a horse and how to walk forward, stop, and make simple turns in their first lesson. After the riding portion of the lesson, we will return to the barn to untack, groom, and return the horse to the stall. And will end the lesson by learning to clean up the equipment and put everything away.
Should I take private or group lessons?
I do not offer group lessons for beginner riders until they have taken at least six weeks of consecutive private lessons. It is our experience that all riders benefit from the one-on-one instruction when they are first starting out, and six weeks is typically the minimum time it takes a new rider to learn the skills required to move up to a semiprivate or group lesson. Some of the skills required include, but are not limited to, being able to get the horse from the stall, tack up independently, tighten the girth, adjust stirrup length, and be able to control and steer the horse at the walk and trot independently. You will be evaluated with safety in mind that you can perform these skills, maybe with a little help, before being invited to join a group lesson. The biggest advantages of the group lessons are the social aspect, as well as the opportunity to watch and learn from other riders. Group lessons also offer longer riding time and are cheaper than ongoing private lessons.
Can I book a one time lesson or trail ride?
We don't offer one time lessons or trail rides to the public. We do occasionally take students on short hacks around the property as a fun way to end a summer lesson.
When do lessons run?
Lessons are run year-round. Rain or shine! Our bright and airy indoor arena allows us to stay dry in wet weather, and out of the wind and snow in the winter. Lessons may be rescheduled in extreme weather conditions that make it unsafe for the horse or rider (i.e.. extreme heat) or if road conditions make travel to the barn unsafe. Lessons can be scheduled between 3pm to 8pm Monday to Friday, as well as Saturday mornings. Occasionally makeup lessons are scheduled on Sundays. Lessons may be available during the day Tuesday, Thursdays, and Fridays by appointment only in the summer months.
When should I arrive for my lesson?
Beginner riders who are still learning to tack up and handle horses should arrive a few minutes before their scheduled time. In this time, they can check the lesson board for their assigned horse and begin getting their equipment out. All other riders should arrive no less than 30 minutes before their lesson. This gives them adequate time to groom and tack their horse and be ready to head to the ring at their scheduled time. It is the responsibility of the rider to have a clean and properly tacked horse for their lesson time.
How many lessons per week should IÂ take?
Many riders take one lesson per week. This is enough for a recreational rider. However, those looking to improve their skills or be competitive should take at least two lessons per week.
